Navigating how to get reimbursement from your insurance can feel overwhelming. However, it can also make psychotherapy much more affordable! I believe in the importance of coming to therapy empowered with the knowledge of not only what you’re looking for on a therapeutic level, but also what is realistic for you on a financial one. It is for this reason that I require all clients who plan to use their insurance to cover counseling cost call to verify their benefits prior to our first session.
Q: How do I verify my benefits?
A: By calling your insurance company! You can typically find your insurance company's member services phone number on the back of your insurance card, or by searching for it online. Follow prompts to "Check Eligibility and Benefits" so that you get connected with the right representative. Once you are connected, ask the following questions:
Is Katherine Kendall, NPI 1649821794 in network with my health insurance?
What is my in-network deductible for outpatient mental health visits? (The amount that you will pay out-of-pocket prior to getting reimbursement from your insurance)
How much of my deductible has been met?
What is my copay for outpatient mental health visits?
Is this coverage applicable before or after I meet my deductible?
Q: If you do not take my health insurance, could I still be eligible for reimbursement?
A: Yes! Even if I do not take your health insurance, you may still be eligible for out-of-network benefits. If your representative tells you that I am not in network with your insurance company, ask them the following questions to understand how much of sessions they will reimburse:
What is my out-of-network deductible for outpatient mental health visits?
How much of my deductible has been met this year?
What is my out-of-network coinsurance for outpatient mental health visits?
Do I need a referral from an in-network provider or a primary care physician to see someone out-of-network?
How do I submit claims for out-of-network reimbursement?
If you’re feeling any anxiety or have questions about calling your insurance company, feel free to reach out!
I promise that getting affordable mental health care will be worth the extra effort.
