Have you ever been in a controlling relationship?
Maybe your partner made you feel like you were never able to do anything right. Maybe you felt like you were constantly walking on eggshells. Perhaps you felt anxious, unable to relax in your own home. You may even have felt emotionally or physically unsafe.
Healthy, loving relationships aren’t just important. They’re necessary.
We need loving relationships to learn, to grow, and to feel safe. Relationships with loved ones can empower us, improve our self-esteem, and help us to become the best versions of ourselves.
But not all relationships make us feel safe, loved and respected. Sometimes the person in our lives who should be building us up spends more time tearing us down. Maybe they hurt us in ways that only the people we care about can: verbal put-downs, controlling and narcissistic behavior, even physical violence.
